A huge glacier in West Antarctica is the Thwaites Glacier. It removes ice from the continent’s interior to the Amundsen Sea. Due to its size and lack of stability, it is frequently referred to as the “Doomsday Glacier.”
Importance of Thwaites Glacier
1.Sea level rise: Thwaites Glacier holds enough ice to raise global sea level about 2 feet (0.6 meters). If it collapses, it will push sea level rise to over 3 meters, threatening coastal countries worldwide.
2. Climate change indicator: The glacier is melting due to warming ocean water underneath it. Scientists study that glacier to understand how climate change is affecting Antarctic glaciers.
3.Ice sheet stability: Thwaites Glacier is holding back much of the West Antarctic ice sheet. If Thwaites Glacier awakening reduces resistance, allowing more ice to melt into the ocean.
4.Global impact: Sea level rising affecting islands, ports, drinking water, agricultural products, coastal countries, deltas, and millions of people across the world.
