Vande Mataramto be played before National Anthem

Date:

The Union government has issued fresh guidelines stating that the National Song, Vande Mataram, should be sung or played before the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana, when both are performed at an event. The instructions were uploaded on the Home Ministry’s website on February 6 without a formal announcement.

The guidelines state that the official 3.1-minute version of Vande Mataram must be respected by standing at attention. However, audiences need not stand if it is played as part of a newsreel or documentary. The song is to be sung on formal occasions such as the arrival and departure of the president, governors and during national flag ceremonies.

When played by a band, it should be preceded by a drum roll. Mass singing may accompany its performance during ceremonial or cultural events. Schools may also begin the day with community singing of the National Song, provided proper decorum is maintained.
