Indonesia Forest Loss Surges 66% in 2025, Hits 8-Year High

Due to lax environmental regulations and an aggressive drive for food and energy self-sufficiency, Indonesia’s forest loss increased by 66% in 2025, reaching its highest rate in eight years, an environmental organization said on Tuesday. The $1.4 trillion economy of the archipelago is mostly dependent on mining and palm crops.
